Hire a principal robotics engineer. Role and discipline are deliberately separate fields — a mechanical engineer working as a checker is a different hire from a mechanical engineer working as a design lead, even with identical qualifications.
Knowing you need a principal robotics engineer is more useful than knowing you need a discipline. It tells the marketplace what the person will do day to day — produce, check, coordinate, inspect or lead — and those are not interchangeable even within one discipline.
