Hire a tailings engineer. Role and discipline are deliberately separate fields — a mechanical engineer working as a checker is a different hire from a mechanical engineer working as a design lead, even with identical qualifications.
Knowing you need a tailings engineer is more useful than knowing you need a discipline. It tells the marketplace what the person will do day to day — produce, check, coordinate, inspect or lead — and those are not interchangeable even within one discipline.
Be explicit about the role in your brief. “We need a checker, not a designer” saves everyone a round of misaligned proposals, and it usually changes the rate you should expect to pay in one direction or the other.
