Product Design Engineer

Knowing you need a product design engineer is more useful than knowing you need a discipline. It tells the marketplace what the person will do day to day — produce, check, coordinate, inspect or lead — and those are not interchangeable even within one discipline.

Be explicit about the role in your brief. “We need a checker, not a designer” saves everyone a round of misaligned proposals, and it usually changes the rate you should expect to pay in one direction or the other.
